Berat is one of the oldest inhabited centres in Albania and a UNESCO site since 2008. The Ottoman quarters of Mangalem and Gorica face each other across the Osum river, joined by the 18th-century stone bridge: this is the 'thousand windows' view.
You climb to the castle — still inhabited by families who have lived there for generations — among Byzantine churches and valley views. Inside, the Onufri Museum houses the icons of the great 16th-century Albanian painter.
